Area code 702: The southeastern tip of Nevada, including the Las Vegas metropolitan area
Area code 725: An overlay area code for the 702 area code effective June 2014.
Area code 775: All of Nevada outside the southeastern corner, including Reno and Carson City / Under the original North American Numbering Plan of 1947, area code 702 covered all of Nevada. Area code 775 split off in 1998.
Area code 503: The northwestern corner of Oregon, including Portland and its metropolitan area, Salem and other cities
Area code 541: All of Oregon outside the northwestern corner, including Eugene
Area code 971: An overlay of area code 503. Until 2008, 971 was a concentrated overlay, meaning it was only present in some parts of the 503 area. Today, however, it is a standard overlay.
Area code 458: An overlay of area code 541.
Area codes 702 and 725 are the North American Numbering Plan telephone area codes serving Clark County, Nevada, including Las Vegas.
Area code 702 was originally assigned to the entire state of Nevada, as one of the original numbering plan areas established in October 1947. On December 12, 1998, most of Nevada, including Reno and Carson City, was split off as area code 775. Nevada's explosive growth in the second half of the 20th century, and the corresponding expansion of telephone service, would have made a second area code a must in any case. However, the split was hastened by the proliferation of cell phones and pagers, particularly in Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City.
The split followed rumors that area code 777, corresponding to the winning number combination for slot machines, was considered for Las Vegas. However, the telecommunications industry ruled out assigning the triple-seven area code to southern Nevada because it was so "easily recognizable" that it needed to be reserved in the event it was needed nationally. This was the same reason why the 555 area code has not been assigned.
Since May 3, 2014, area code 702 has been overlaid with area code 725. Ten-digit dialing is required for all calls, with exceptions for landline-based callers calling long distance within the county, for which "1" must be dialed first.
Despite Las Vegas' continued rapid growth, 702/725 is nowhere near exhaustion. Projections in 2017 suggested that the Las Vegas area would not need another area code until late 2045 at the earliest. However, the most recent projections, in October 2019, did not include an exhaust date for 702/725, meaning that the exhaust date is at least 30 years in the future.
Area code 775 is a Nevada telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan. It was split from area code 702 on December 12, 1998, and covers the entire state except for Clark County, which retained area code 702 after the split. Major cities in this area code include Reno, Carson City and Elko. While it appears to be rural, more than 80 percent of its numbers are located in the far western portion, around Reno and Carson City.
Prior to the creation of 775, area code 702 had served all of Nevada for 51 years. The state's dramatic growth in the second half of the 20th century, and the corresponding growth in telephone service, would have made a second area code a must in any event. However, the proliferation of cell phones, pagers, and fax machines, particularly in Reno and Carson City, hastened the need for the expansion of Nevada's number pool.
Despite Reno and Carson City's continued growth, 775 is nowhere near exhaustion. The projected exhaust date for 775 is 2045.
Area code 541 was first put in service November 5, 1995. It was created from area code 503. In 2010, area code 458 was created and is currently an overlay to 541.
Area code 503 is one of the original 86 area codes created by AT&T and the Bell System in 1947. It originally served the entire state of Oregon. 503 was split in 1995 creating the need to update some of the phone numbers to area code 541. In 2000, area code 971 was created and is currently an overlay to 503.
Area code 971 was first put in service October 1, 2000. It was created from area code 503.
Area code 458 was first put in service February 10, 2010. It was created from area code 541.
